My role is part-teacher, part-tour guide and part-facilitator.
My role is less of a participant as it is teacher/moderator. That’s a book club leader does.
For example, if going through a classic like Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, we’d get into things like the culture of Cuba at the time, Hemingway’s writing style and general biography, and other matters which influenced the writing and understanding of the book. It would be something like a high school book discussion, only with no papers or grades.
It takes the pressure off of the group to have a leader prepare each time, plus adds an element of expertise.
